Dueling and Anti-Dueling

Unlike most moralist currents—think the Women’s Temperance Leagues in the 19th-century—the anti-dueling movement can look back on an uninterrupted existence that began in the 16th century and has lasted without meaningful interruption until the present. No matter if their authors were churchmen, social progressives, absolutists, or, today, politically correct academicians, the predominantly male settlement of extra-judicial conflicts by force of arms, anti-dueling treatises come in all shapes and sizes, and look at interpersonal combat as sinful denial of divine commandment or, even worse, an affront against the state.

Over the years, I’ve collected a number of titles on the sinfulness of crossing blades or slinging lead at each other from 30 paces. Other than delineating the hostile social and culture environments in which particularly edged-weapons combat was allowed to exist, they may not offer much to the active fencer, but more for modern academics engaged in the research of anti-masculine subjects whose departments typically end in “xyz Studies”.
